Video Codec

The title must meet Filmhub’s Compression Requirements (Learn More)

Preferred:

  • Apple ProRes 422 & 422 HQ (not LT, Proxy, 4444, XQ or any other)

  • Avid DNxHR (SQ & up)

  • Avid DNxHD (min. 145 for 1080p, 80 for 720p, 60 for SD)

Potentially Acceptable:

  • H.264, min. 2 MBit/s for SD, 15 MBit/s for HD, 50 MBit/s for UHD/4k.

  • H.265, min. 2 MBit/s for SD, 15 MBit/s for HD, 50 MBit/s for UHD/4k

  • MPEG-2,

  • DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO, and variants

File Types

  • .mpg
  • .mpeg
  • .mov

Video

  • Timecode tracks/streams should be removed. Your files should only include video and audio tracks/streams.
  • Max. 2 sec before the program starts and 2 sec after the program ends. No color bars, slate, MPAA/FBI cards, test-tone, pre-roll, or post-roll
  • The video must start and end on at least 1 black frame
  • No burned-in subtitles throughout (Exception: Trailer - see below). Partial burned-in subtitles are acceptable for mixed-language or inaudible dialogue. See Caption Requirements.
  • Not interlaced (Learn more)
  • No blended frames, ghosting (Learn more)
  • No padding, letterboxing, pillarboxing.
  • No watermark or logo burned-in throughout
  • No URLs or promos (e.g. websites, "coming soon" or similar, release dates, available to download/stream, Facebook or other social media/streaming platform mentions, or other promotional references)
  • Sample Aspect Ratio (SAR) must have 1:1 square pixels (Learn more)
  • No Duplicate frames (we only allow occasional duplicate frames due to the use of mixed media)
  • No squeezed/stretched videos. The correct aspect ratio should be used throughout.
  • No cropped elements (especially text)
  • No output errors (missing media info, dropouts, corrupt frames, etc.)

Resolution

  • Minimum width we accept is 640 pixels and the pixel width and height must always be even numbers
  • Always upload the original source resolution. Do not upscale or downscale.

Frame rates

  • Original framerate: 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, or 60. Do not convert framerate unless the source is not a supported one.
  • Avoid duplicated frames and blended frames.

Chapters

Audio Codec

  • PCM: minimum 48 kHz 16 Bit
  • AAC, or MP3: minimum 128 kbps (stereo)
  • AC-3: minimum 192 kbps (stereo)

Audio

  • Audio levels should be around a minimum of -24 LUFS
  • No Clipping
  • No Phasing
  • No Distortion
  • No Dropouts, ticks, pops, etc.
  • The mix must be center-balanced, especially the dialogue.

Channel layout:

  • Stereo mix is preferred
  • Dual mono (identical L and R channels) is acceptable only when the source is mono
  • We also support any audio stream and channel configuration, including all surround formats (5.1 is preferred), as long as a discrete Stereo mix is included.

Trailer

In addition to the Video & Audio requirements above (Video Codec, Resolution, etc.):

  • Burned-in subtitles throughout English audio trailers are not allowed
  • Burned-in English subtitles are required for non-English dialogue
  • Max. 6 min, recommended 2.5 mins or less
  • You can submit an excerpt of 2 minutes of your title if you do not have a standard trailer, please label the file excerpt_titlename
  • To maximize exposure for your title, we recommend avoiding content that includes nudity, sex, language, drugs, or violence, since some channels will not include trailers with these content rating concerns.

  • A great trailer immensely improves the chances of licensing your title and engaging audiences.

    However, trailers are considered non-mandatory assets. We will never delete your trailer in order to pass your title. But, if your title has not passed QC after two attempts, we will include a note reminding you to delete the trailer if you are unable to fix it before resubmitting your title for a third and final QC review.

 

Channel-Specific Requirements

These requirements are specific to the below Channels. Assets that contain any of the following elements may pass Filmhub Quality Control (QC). However, instances of these elements are likely to prevent securing a license with the channel.

Note: Filmhub can never guarantee that a specific Channel will license a title, even when assets do not contain the below elements. Each Channel has its own content requirements and discretion to accept or reject titles that Filmhub pitches to them.

Amazon Prime Video

Main Video
  • Your Main Video must include an opening title card that matches the title name.

Apple TV

Main Video
  • Burned-in subtitles and forced text quality: Grammar, spelling, and casing issues may prevent placement on Apple TV.
Trailers

Trailers including any of these elements will not prevent Filmhub from placing the title on Apple TV, however, a clip from the main video will display on the Apple TV landing page instead.

  • Content Rating Issues: Apple will reject the trailer if it contains nudity, sex, logos, release dates (”Coming Soon”, etc.), watermarks, ratings, certificates, MPAA, FBI, legal, format (“Modified..”), social media URLs, or complete forced subs.
  • Content must match that which is in the main video EXACTLY. For example, if the trailer is censored at a specific scene pulled from the main video, then the main video must also be censored.
  • File Specs: Aspect ratio, resolution, and audio layout need to match the main video.
  • Video Squeezed/Stretched Occasionally: Apple may accept trailers in which the image is occasionally squeezed/stretched. They are more likely to accept this if your title is a documentary that uses mixed media or archival footage. However, we highly recommend that you avoid having any squeezed/stretched sequences.
  • Interlacing: if your title is a documentary that uses archival interlaced footage, Apple will usually accept this. If your title is fiction, they will usually reject the trailer if they consider the interlacing frequent and severe.
  • Occasional Duplicate Frames: if your title is a documentary that uses archival footage, Apple will usually accept this. If your title is fiction, Apple will sometimes reject the trailer if they consider the duplicate frames to be frequent and severe.
  • Blended Frames: if your title is a documentary that uses archival footage, Apple will usually accept this. If your title is fiction, Apple will sometimes reject the trailer if they consider the blended frames to be frequent and severe.
  • Dual Mono Mix: Apple will accept dual mono mixes if they consider the audio quality the same as the main video.
  • Contains Promos or URLs: these are best to avoid. Promos and URLs may be okay if they are not perceived as in direct competition with Apple.
  • Occasional Watermarks: this is usually acceptable. However, it depends on the watermark and the reason as to why it is there.
